Establish Design Criteria

The IES separates Roadways from Streets based on a lack of pedestrian and cyclist interaction (IES RP-8-18, page 3-1). Roadways are therefore considered to be Freeways and Expressways. Streets are essentially everything else. In our example for this class we will be lighting a “street”.

From IES RP-8-18, Table 11-1:

Street Classification: Collector

Pedestrian Area Classification: Medium

Pavement classification: R4 (Smooth asphalt)

Average luminance: 0.6 cd/m2

Uniformity Ratios: Lavg/Lmin = 3.5, Lmax/Lmin = 6.0

Max. Veiling luminance ratio: 0.4 (Max Lv/Lavg)
